We began as an excavating company, but quickly expanded from there. We offer many excavating services  which include, but are not limited to:

  • Certified installation of septic systems 

  • Basement installation excavation

  • Housing foundations work

  • Installation of sewer and water lines

  • Support for new well installation

  • The maintenance, repair, and replacement of water lines

  • Storm water and sanitary water retention

  • Footings and foundation excavation

  • Retention basins


Commercial Trucking

Unlike other owner-operator services, Merchant Excavating, Inc. is a Managed Trucking Service with a growing team of logistical specialists and drivers. Our drivers collectively have over 100 years of safe driving experience.


We primarily run throughout Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, and Kentucky. However, after recently adding sleepers to our fleet, we have expanded this territory to the Southeast and Southwest regions of the country but are always open to new opportunities and locations.


Our fleet consists of sleeper and day cab trucks, dry vans (53′ with swing doors), flatbed/conestoga (53′ with rolling tarp system), a lowboy trailer for oversized equipment hauling, and seasonal gravel trains.

We have state certified mechanics each specializing in their own area of expertise. With over 50 years of combined experience, they keep our fleet and several local customers’ equipment in top condition using state of the art technical diagnostic tools.

About Us

In 1987 David Merchant founded the company under the name of Dave Merchant Excavating. Then, in 2004, the name was changed to Merchant Excavating, Inc. after Ed Taylor joined as co-owner. Ed expanded our services to include mechanical repairs on the company fleet. In 2008 our services expanded once again to include local manure hauling. 

The teamwork of our hard-working employees has allowed us to face and overcome hard setbacks; including a major rebuild after the catastrophic fire destroyed the company’s base in 2013. Two short years later in 2015, the hauling of commercial freight was added to our list of services with the final addition of mechanical repairs to public customers in 2016. Since then, Merchant Excavating, Inc. has thrived with other businesses in the community through their dedicated services.

Head Accountant

Job Description

The candidate must be well-disciplined, detail-oriented and organized. They should be able to evaluate and drive cost savings and service enhancements that will benefit the company and its customers. The individual must be team-oriented but able to produce positive results with assigned objectives on an independent basis. The candidate in this role will undertake all aspects of company financials, including reporting, budget and forecast preparation, and development of internal control policies and procedures to support company growth and productivity initiatives. Position reports to owner and management team, to organize and analyze all costs relative to managing the company’s expenditures. Key deliverables for the role include coordination of weekly and monthly costs and productivity analysis as well as involvement in key initiatives.


Essential Functions:

  • Analysis of company’s income and expenditure to include the company budgets.

  • Analyze spending data and perform in depth financial analysis across all departments.

  • Coordinate month end, quarterly, and annual cost analysis.

  • General office duties including, but not limited to answering phones, filing, data entry, deposits, etc.

  • Maintain quality results by following standards, procedures, and regulations.

  • Assist the Office Manager and external accountants with processing of daily tasks including timesheets, payroll, invoicing, and maintaining the chart of accounts.

  • Prepare and document accurate reports, logs, and records.

  • Additional duties, as necessary.


Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a financial position, bookkeeper and/or a related position preferred with a demonstrated understanding of cost modeling.

  • Minimum of a degree in Accounting and/or Business Management.

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks required including effective communication skills.



  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures including creating financial statements, budgets, general ledger functions, job costing, along with month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Excellent organization, coordination, confidentiality, and communication skills are a must.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little to no supervision.

  • Able to meet demanding deadlines.
